Traffic Survival School and Ignition Interlock: What to Expect and How to Comply

If you’ve been ordered to attend traffic survival school or install an ignition interlock, you probably want straight answers and a clear path forward. This article explains what each program does, how they interact with Arizona legal requirements, and what you must do to restore or keep driving privileges.

You’ll learn how traffic survival school reduces points and risk while ignition interlocks prevent driving after drinking, what enrollment and completion look like, and the consequences if you don’t comply. Expect practical details about duration, fees, exemptions, program content, and where to find support so you can make informed decisions and move forward confidently.

Arizona Legal Requirements

You need to know when your license can be suspended, what programs you must enroll in, and which statutes govern ignition interlocks and Traffic Survival School. Specific timelines, installation rules, and reporting duties determine how quickly you regain driving privileges.

License Suspension Criteria

Arizona suspends driving privileges for DUI-related convictions, implied consent refusals, and certain repeat or aggravated offenses. A first-time DUI can lead to a civil or criminal suspension depending on blood alcohol concentration (BAC) and whether injury or property damage occurred. Refusing a lawful breath test under implied consent typically triggers an automatic administrative suspension with separate timelines from a criminal sentence.

Suspensions may be longer for repeat offenses or when a minor is present in the vehicle. You also face re-suspension or extension of interlock requirements if you fail to comply with IID rules or incur additional alcohol-related violations. Check your suspension notice for exact start and end dates and any conditional reinstatement options.

Mandatory Program Enrollment Procedures

If ordered, you must enroll in an ADOT‑approved Traffic Survival School and, where required, arrange ignition interlock device (IID) installation through a certified vendor. For many DUI dispositions, the court or ADOT will specify enrollment deadlines and proof-of-completion requirements. You will need to provide documentation—such as a school completion certificate or IID installation receipt—to the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) to restore or maintain limited driving privileges.

IID vendors must meet ADOT/NHTSA standards; you must use a certified installer for calibration, maintenance, and removal. Expect to pay installation, monthly monitoring, and calibration fees. Failure to attend classes, skip IID maintenance, or submit required paperwork can delay reinstatement or trigger further penalties.

Relevant Statutes and Regulations

Key Arizona laws include ARS §28-1461 and §28-1464, which set IID requirements, violations, and enforcement measures. These statutes spell out when an IID is mandatory, prohibited conduct (such as providing a sample for another person), and penalties for tampering or noncompliance. ADOT and the Motor Vehicle Division implement administrative rules and maintain lists of approved Traffic Survival Schools and certified IID devices.

You must follow both statutory mandates and MVD procedural rules—ignoring either can lead to license re-suspension or extended IID periods. Consult the MVD’s published guidance or the ADOT ignition interlock program for current device specifications, approved vendors, and submission addresses for required documentation.
